Course Overview:

Leptospirosis remains a challenging disease to recognize and diagnose in cattle, in part because the most common cattle-adapted strain often causes subtle disease and a long-term carrier state. This course features a recorded webinar presented by Dr. Tamara Gull, a board-certified veterinary microbiologist and Section Head of Bacteriology and Mycology at the University of Missouri Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory.

Dr. Gull reviews the organism and how it is transmitted, the range of clinical signs seen in cattle, and why the disease is so difficult to diagnose. Diagnostic testing, treatment of both acute infection and the renal carrier state, and prevention through vaccination and management of water and wildlife exposure are also discussed.

Learning Outcomes:

Individuals who complete this course will be able to:
Describe how leptospirosis is transmitted.
Recognize the clinical signs of leptospirosis in cattle.
Explain the diagnostic approach to leptospirosis, including PCR and serology.
Compare treatment options for acute infection and for clearing the renal carrier state.
