Course Overview:
This on-demand, self-paced course is designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of medical providers caring for individuals with overweight or obesity. Be sure to check out the course Syllabus to increase your understanding of learner requirements if you want credit for your participation in one or more modules. This course includes four modules with brief video-based lessons.

  • Increase confidence in managing children with obesity
  • Increase confidence in managing adult with obesity
  • Increase understanding of the concept of structural competency in the context of obesity

Topics:
Module 1: Childhood Obesity
By the end of this module, learners will:
  • Self-report an increase in knowledge about evaluation, treatment, clinic-based supports and clinical-community connections for children with obesity.
  • Self-report an increase in confidence about managing children with obesity.
  • Self-report an increased understanding in evaluation and treatment recommendations.
 
Module 2:  Adult Obesity 
By the end of this module, learners will:
  • Self-report an increase in knowledge about diagnosis, evaluation, and management of adults with obesity.
  • Self-report an increase in confidence about managing adults with obesity.
 
Module 3:  Contextual Factors Influencing Risk for Obesity Intro
By the end of this module, learners will:
  • Self-report how structural factors, including historic policies and practice, influence health and health inequities.
  • Self-report multi-level facilitators and barriers between patients and the healthcare system.
  • Self-report strategies to identify and engage key community stakeholders to improve healthcare quality.
  • Self-report ways to increase community trust, including the enlistment of natural helpers and CHWs, to improve patient-provider trust and rapport.
  • Self-report communication strategies to reach patients; and Collaborate with community partners to develop strategies to address patients’ social needs.
 
Module 4: Effective Communication for Obesity Care
By the end of this module, learners will:
  • Self-report an increased understanding of the concept of structural competency
  • Self-report an increased understanding of the relationship between structural factors in obesity
  • Self report an increased knowledge of resources available to address structural factors

Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Missouri. Academic Fellowship earning MsPH degree. Her research focuses on child and adult obesity, especially mHealth apps for families and EHR tools for providers to address child and adolescent obesity in clinic.
