Substance use disorders (SUD) present a major public health concern with a significant impact on health, including increased mortality, interpersonal and socioeconomic difficulties. Nationally, Missouri ranks highest among states for drug use with rural communities disproportionately affected. Nurses, first responders and community workers play a vital role in preventing, recognizing and addressing substance use. Knowledge and education are critical to acknowledging addiction as a chronic disease and decreasing the associated shame and stigma to support recovery and improved quality of life.
